Although the Gospel of John speaks of eternal life-one way of talking about happiness-in this life, much Christian eschatology has spoken of happiness primarily as a goal achievable only when "life is o're." Happiness arrives in another life, where the saints dwell forever with God, that is, with perfect knowledge of God in the blessed vision. Perhaps more to the point of thinking that happiness-talk is Christianly odd is the fact that eschatology is all about happiness. Both Augustine of Hippo 1 and Thomas Aquinas 2 wrote specific treatises on the topic and Augustine has sections on happiness scattered through his corpus. God and the Art of Happiness Perhaps it seems odd to some, even quite odd for theology to talk about happiness.
